Public Art – what is it, who makes it and who is it for?
Public art is all around us — from large-scale sculptures and murals to temporary installations and unexpected creative moments in everyday places. But who decides what counts as public art? Who gets to make it? And most importantly, who is it for?
In this interactive online session, we’ll explore these questions together, using real-world examples from across the globe to understand the many ways public art can look, feel and function. We’ll consider how it can reflect community identities, spark conversations, and reimagine public spaces — including our own local environment along the River Ouse.
Led by artist and public art producer Sam Williams, this session invites you to think critically and creatively about the role of art in public life. Whether you're an artist, a curious local, or completely new to the topic, you’ll be encouraged to bring your thoughts, questions and ideas. No prior knowledge needed — just an interest in how creativity can shape and reflect the world around us.
Open to everyone 16+
These online sessions feed into a series of community co-design events as part of our wider River/ Flow Connect project.
What is River/ Flow/ Connect?
River/Flow/Connect is a Bedford Creative Arts project designed to deepen community engagement with the River Great Ouse in Kempston, Queen’s Park, Kingsbrook & Cauldwell, and Great Denham. Through artistic installations and creative activities, the project invites residents to connect with the river on their doorstep, fostering a sense of place and shared experience.
This long-term project aims to install a series of community co-commissioned, functional sculptures along the river that celebrate the community’s relationship with the River Great Ouse and encourage recreation along the riverbank.
